The Mega Tree

After adding the mini trees and more bushes for our 2017 show, we really wanted to create a vertical element to add to our show starting in 2018. Our solution was the creation of a smaller-scale mega tree. Special thanks to Greg Smith for providing information on how he built his! The final tree has 2,600 lights total comprising 2,400 M6 LED lights and 200 Cosmic Color Bulbs.

Here is a complete list of everything we purchased for this build:

  • 8 x 10-foot sections of 1/2-inch Schedule 40 PVC Pipe
(not all 8 ended up being used)
  • 14 x 1/2-inch PVC Caps
(8 used on crown, 4 used on bottom riser legs, 2 on CCB controller hanger)
  • 4 x 1/2-inch 3-way “tee” PVC slip connectors
    (used on bottom ring)
  • 13 x 1/2-inch 4-way “cross” PVC slip connectors
(4 on bottom ring, 8 on middle ring, 1 used to make CCB controller hanger)
  • 24 x 1/2-inch 45-degree elbow PVC slip connectors
(8 each on bottom and middle rings, 8 on crown)
  • Bolts, washers, and locking nuts for crown caps
  • Rubber cement

The bottom, middle, and top rings were assembled from the various pieces. The three rings were then joined together, and everything was spray painted with matte black spray paint. The result is an eight-foot tall tree that really shines and provides some very neat effects!
